In Overboss, rival Boss Monsters emerge from their dungeons to conquer the Overworld. Each turn, players draft and place terrain tiles and monster tokens. Their goal: to craft the map with the greatest Power and become the ultimate Overboss!
Designed by Aaron Mesburne and Kevin Russ (Calico), this fast-paced game combines drafting, set collection, and puzzly tile laying. It's set in the retro-inspired pixel art world of Brotherwise Games' best-selling Boss Monster, but this is an entirely new experience.
Build your map by drafting Forests, Swamps, Caves, Camps, Graveyards, Dungeon Entrances and other landscapes. Each terrain type has a different point value, and some increase in Power as you acquire larger sets. Players must balance optimal placement, set values, and disrupt their opponents' sets. You'll also need to manage monsters, which award points when grouped together or placed on matching terrain.
The game includes everything needed for up to 5 players: over 120 terrain tiles, over 100 monster tokens, 5 double-sided player boards, a scorepad, and more.
Gameplay
In this game you build your own pixelated adventure world out of tiles and monstertokens! Players take turns drafting a card and a token to place these on the board, trying to place them in a way scoring the most points in the end. When all tiles are placed on the board, game ends and the players calculate scoring based upon what's on their boards.
There are a lot of ways to change the game precisely to your needs. You can..:
...flip the board to go from a 34 grid to a 44 grid, making the game longer.
...add the boss cards, giving you an special power during the game and an extra scoring condition in the end.
...add the command cards, you activate these cards when fullfilling a given condition giving you an extra power to use.
Thoughts
The flexibility of this game is epic! A basic game will be very easy to teach and take around 20 minutes. Want something else? Just tailor your needs. I love it when a game does that!
The gameplay is elegant and engaging. You soon learn the way the tiles score, but it keeps on being interesting because the tiles that you have access to vary game to game, and you can make different combinations every time again. The additions are very nice as well.
Mann I think this game is so addictive. I haven't even mentioned that this game comes with a campaign solo. I really like how they've done this, you should really check it out!
