Dune: Imperium is a game that finds inspiration in elements and characters from the Dune legacy, both the new film from Legendary Pictures and the seminal literary series from Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson.
As a leader of one of the Great Houses of the Landsraad, raise your banner and marshal your forces and spies. War is coming, and at the center of the conflict is Arrakis – Dune, the desert planet. Dune: Imperium uses deck-building to add a hidden-information angle to traditional worker placement. Defeat your rivals in combat, shrewdly navigate the political factions, and acquire precious The Spice Must Flow cards to lead your House to victory!
Gameplay
This game combines deckbuilding with workerplacement in an elegant way. Players each start with a character giving them some sort of special power throughout the game.
During a turn players play a card and place a worker. play will then pass to the next player and so on until players pass. Then combat will be resolved, giving a bonus to the winner and players get to buy new cards with the amount of persuasion left in their hands in order to enhance their decks.
When a player reaches ten points all players get to finish their turn and then the player with the highest points wins the game.
Thoughts
👍 I love how deckbuilding is precisely rewarding enough in this game, making it a tight game and really feel great when you’re achieving stuff.
👍 The workerplacement is a bit subordinate to the deckbuilding in my view, however it does really add to the depth of the game, making this game like a great deckbuilding game but then EVEN BETTER since workerplacement is intangled so nicely!
👍 That the combat and persuasion in the hands remains hidden untill the reveal turn is very well done.
👍 The game ticks like a clock, everything works fluently, therefore I can highly recommend it!
❌ The artwork on the board is a bit cold, but on the other hand I do find it fitting with the theme.
Solomode
In the solomode you have not 1 but 2 opponents. It’s handled via one deck of cards, or a free downloadable app which does the work for you. It is a very solid solo and exciting to compete against the two opponents.
